Cypress Launches Updated IoT Development Platform with New iCloud Capabilities to Simplify Wireless Connectivity Design for Smart Home Applications
Cypress, a leader in wireless connectivity solutions for the Internet of Things, recently announced an upgraded version of its one-stop IoT development platform to simplify the integration of wireless connectivity for smart home applications. The Wireless Internet Connectivity for Embedded Devices (WICED®) Studio platform now adds iCloud remote access for Wi-Fi connected devices that support Apple HomeKit™.
Developers can use Cypress's CYW43907 Wi-Fi® MCU and the iCloud feature in the WICED SDK to create a development platform independent of the Hub, directly connecting to Siri voice control and Apple Home APP remotely. Developers can access the WICED Studio platform, ecosystem and community at http://www.cypress.com/wicedcommunity .
Emerging smart home applications have brought the most substantial improvements to our daily lives. Not only can we more conveniently control lighting, home appliances and thermostats remotely, but we can also more effectively manage the use and energy consumption of these devices, which is a win-win for the environment and the economic interests of consumers.
Cypress’s latest WICED Studio development platform adds HomeKit support for OEM manufacturers’ smart home products, which can be easily controlled by Siri voice and iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch through HomeKit.

For example, Leviton uses the Cypress WICED platform to support Homekit functionality in its DecoraSmart™ lighting switch and dimmer series.
With the Cypress WICED development platform and the ultra-low-power CYW20719 Bluetooth/BLE MCU, developers can integrate HomeKit functionality into products such as smart lighting, use Siri voice control and seamlessly connect to the Apple Home app.
WICED Studio, the world's most integrated and interoperable wireless SDK, can accommodate multiple wireless technologies in a single development environment, including Cypress's world-leading Wi-Fi, Bluetooth® and combination solutions, and has an easy-to-use application programming interface. The suite includes the most widely used and rigorously tested Wi-Fi and Bluetooth protocol stacks on the market, as well as simplified application programming interfaces that developers can use without having to learn complex wireless technologies. The SDK also supports Cypress's high-performance 802.11ac Wi-Fi solution, which enables IoT devices to have faster download speeds and greater coverage through high-speed transmission, while reducing energy consumption by quickly entering deep sleep mode.
The Cypress CYW43907 SoC integrates dual-band IEEE 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi and an ARM® Cortex®-R4 RISC processor with 2 MB of SRAM memory to run applications and manage IoT protocols. The SoC's power management unit simplifies power topology and optimizes energy consumption. The Cypress WICED SDK provides code examples, tools, and development support for the CYW43907.
About Cypress WICED Studio IoT Development Platform
The Cypress WICED platform supports a variety of popular cloud services. Developers do not need to use multiple protocols to connect to these clouds separately, saving development time and costs. The WICED Studio SDK has a unique and powerful library that includes various common cloud services such as iCloud, Amazon Web Services, IBM Bluemix, Alibaba Cloud, and Microsoft Azure, as well as services from private cloud partners and China's social media Weibo, so cloud connections can be achieved within minutes.
Cypress WICED SDK complies with the development trend of dual-mode connectivity in the Internet of Things, supporting Cypress's Wi-Fi and Bluetooth combination solutions, as well as its Bluetooth low energy and Bluetooth low energy (BLE) combination solutions. The SDK only requires a single installer to cover multiple wireless technologies, using an Eclipse-based integrated development environment (IDE) that can run on multiple operating systems such as Windows, MacOS and Linux.
Cypress's WICED Studio connectivity kit is compatible with a variety of microcontrollers (MCUs) and provides ready-made support for a variety of third-party MCUs to meet the needs of complex IoT applications. In addition, the platform also brings cost-effective solutions for simple IoT applications by integrating MCU functions in connectivity devices. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth protocol stacks can run transparently on the MCU host or in embedded mode to achieve a flexible platform architecture based on common firmware.
