Industry-leading Raspberry Pi IoT development board uses Cypress wireless connectivity solutions
Cypress recently announced that its Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth® combination solution provides wireless connectivity for the new Raspberry Pi Zero W IoT application development board.
The Cypress CYW43438 combo solution provides developers with powerful and stable 802.11n Wi-Fi connectivity, enabling their applications to be network-enabled, and enables Bluetooth 4.1 features to be used simultaneously with WiFi through advanced coexistence algorithms, such as audio streaming, and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connectivity with smartphones, sensors, and other low-power devices. The Raspberry Pi 3 development board with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity also uses Cypress's wireless connectivity solutions.
Raspberry Pi says
“With Cypress’ combined solution, designers can use the Raspberry Pi Zero W to connect their devices to ubiquitous Wi-Fi networks at the system level, and to smartphones and other low-power smart devices via Bluetooth,” said Eben Upton, CEO of Raspberry Pi. “This highly integrated Cypress solution makes our development board widely available to IoT developers at an affordable price, eliminating the need for them to purchase wireless adapters that are more expensive than their boards. The Zero W has been well received by development engineers and makers alike.”

Technical Analysis
The Raspberry Pi Zero W is equipped with a 1GHz single-core CPU, 512MB RAM, Mini-HDMI and Micro-USB interfaces, composite video and reset jacks and a CSI camera connector, as well as 802.11n wireless LAN and Bluetooth 4.1 wireless connectivity.
The Cypress CYW43438 combo solution integrates IEEE 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity in a single-chip solution for compact IoT designs. The solution has a maximum PHY data rate of 150 Mbps and can manage the coexistence of advanced Wi-Fi and Bluetooth data stream applications. The combo solution is supported by Cypress's Wireless Internet Connectivity for Embedded Devices (WICED®) Software Development Kit (SDK), which provides code examples, tools and development support.
About Cypress WICED IoT Development Platform
The Cypress WICED Studio IoT development platform includes an integrated, interoperable wireless software development kit (SDK). The SDK includes rigorously tested Wi-Fi and Bluetooth protocol stacks and simplified application programming interfaces that developers can use without having to learn complex wireless technologies. The SDK follows the trend of dual-mode connectivity in the IoT and supports Cypress's Wi-Fi and Bluetooth combination solutions, as well as its Bluetooth and low-power Bluetooth devices. In addition to supporting various common cloud services such as Amazon Web Services, IBM Bluemix, Alibaba Cloud, and Microsoft Azure, the SDK's unique and powerful library is also compatible with the services of various private cloud partners, so cloud connectivity can be achieved within minutes.
Cypress's WICED Studio connectivity suite is compatible with a wide range of microcontrollers (MCUs) and provides ready-made support for many third-party MCUs to meet the needs of complex IoT applications. In addition, the platform also brings cost-effective solutions for simple IoT applications by integrating MCU functions for connected devices. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth protocol stacks can run transparently on the MCU host or in embedded mode, enabling a flexible platform architecture with common firmware.
