In 2014, major mobile phone chip manufacturers such as MediaTek and Qualcomm will compete fiercely on new chip solutions such as 4G, 8-core and 64-bit. However, the industry expects that in the second half of 2014 or the first half of 2015, the solutions launched by global mobile phone chip manufacturers will be similar. By then, the firepower of mobile phone core chips will be obviously insufficient, and the key to winning the mobile phone market share is likely to shift to peripheral chips and application functions, especially new applications such as fast and wireless charging, fingerprint recognition, NFC, etc., which has prompted MediaTek, Qualcomm and others to prepare for battle and increase investment.

Although smartphone hardware continued to upgrade in 2014, chip giants such as MediaTek and Qualcomm have recently stepped up their investment in new application technologies, including fast and wireless charging, fingerprint recognition, and NFC. Taiwanese IC design companies said that smartphone hardware may lack innovative technology in 2014, and hardware functions will face upgrade bottlenecks. Domestic and foreign brand mobile phone manufacturers have decided to start with peripheral products and technology applications, hoping to give consumers a newer user experience and thus trigger demand for replacement phones.

IC design industry players pointed out that although 4G, 8-core and 64-bit mobile phone chip solutions will be released by major chip manufacturers in 2014, the 8-core generation will continue for some time. As for the 12- and 16-core mobile phone chip solutions, the overall effect is unclear, and the mainstream process technology is difficult to keep up with the progress. The global mobile phone chip market is likely to face the dilemma of being unable to upgrade in the second half of 2014, and the high-end smartphone market will face the problem of insufficient core chip firepower.

With fast and wireless charging, NFC, fingerprint recognition and other functions likely to be the highlights of new applications in new smartphones in 2014, MediaTek and Qualcomm will certainly not miss this key to market success and have increased their investment. Taiwanese analog IC suppliers said that through new applications such as wireless and fast charging, mobile phone users are expected to enjoy the convenience of contactless charging and significantly shortened charging time.

At the end of 2013, MediaTek called on more than 10 domestic and foreign analog IC suppliers to join this revolutionary business opportunity of wireless and fast charging application technology. Although MediaTek took the lead, it is expected that the fast and wireless charging application interface and functions will only increase the overall cost by less than 10%. Faced with fierce competition from brands and white-label operators in the terminal mobile phone market, MediaTek's new application chip with high cost performance seems to have a good chance of winning.
