Semiconductor industry is once again rumored to have laid off employees. German media reported that Globalfoundries is planning the next round of personnel reductions to survive the semiconductor recession. The main reductions are in the wafer fab in Dresden, Germany, with one-fifth of the plant's employees, about 700 to 800 people.
Rutger Wijburg, CEO of Globalfoundries, announced on October 2, German time, that relevant manpower reductions will be carried out. Currently, there are about 3,700 employees in the 12-inch Fab 1 wafer fab in Dresden, Germany. This time, 20% of the manpower will be reduced, and about 700 to 800 positions will be affected. The relevant personnel have been notified the day before and relevant negotiations have been carried out.
Globalfoundries is the world's third largest semiconductor foundry company, second only to TSMC and UMC. The affected factories this time are mainly Fab 1 in Dresden, the capital of the Free State of Saxony, Germany. This is also Fab 36 and Fab 38 that originally belonged to AMD. This is not the first time that Globalfoundries has laid off employees this year. In the summer of 2015, it first terminated about 170 contract employees. In September, it also implemented a wave of preferential retirement plans in the hope that the cost structure can be more competitive.
In the future, Wijburg said that Fab 1 in Dresden will continue to operate. Globalfoundries also continues to strive for orders from all walks of life. After acquiring IBM's semiconductor department and cooperating with Samsung, it has obtained the technology license for 14-nanometer FinFET (fin field-effect transistor), hoping to win processors from Apple and Qualcomm and GPU orders from Nvidia and AMD.
Recently, under the policy promotion of the Chinese government, it is vigorously expanding related semiconductor products. There are also rumors in the market that China is very interested in Globalfoundries and even intends to acquire it to obtain related technologies. Currently, Globalfoundries is a company wholly owned by the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

[Graphic] Even the Fortune 500 can’t handle the global layoffs
September didn’t start peacefully. First, Phoenix.com released an internal “layoff” email at noon on September 1, saying that the company had problems such as “stock undervaluation”, “overstaffing”, “bloated structure”, and “organizational overlap”, and that it was urgent to downsize and transform. Then, on the 2nd, Bloomberg announced that it would lay off 90 editors. Subsequently, Korean media also revealed on September 8 that Samsung Electronics responded to the Chinese market being taken over by Apple and Chinese manufacturers by “laying off 10% of its headquarters”. With big companies taking the lead, more and more companies are also starting to “sharpen their knives”. (Source: Interface)
