[Help] What is the purpose of impulse withstand voltage test? What is the difference between it and surge? [Copy link]

 

Hello, everyone!

The customer's wall-mounted charging pile equipment was damaged during a 5KV impulse voltage test. What is the purpose of this impulse voltage test? What are the voltages between which two points is 5KV?

In addition, I heard that the impulse voltage test is tested with a surge generator. So, what are the similarities and differences between the impulse voltage test and the surge test?

The purpose of surge immunity testing is to establish a common benchmark to evaluate the performance of electrical and electronic equipment when subjected to surges (shocks). According to the general requirements of the IEC61000-4-5 surge immunity test, the lightning surge generator simulates a 1.2/50us voltage waveform, an 8/20us current waveform and a combination wave (voltage waveform: 10/700us, current waveform: 5/320us), and couples the waveform to the circuit under test through a coupling network, thus achieving the experimental purpose.   Details Published on 2022-7-14 11:00

Impulse voltage test? I don't quite understand, but I understand the value of 5KV as a withstand voltage test. I don't know if it is correct. The purpose of the withstand voltage test is mainly to test the insulation performance.

Personal understanding:

  • Impulse withstand voltage is an instantaneous high-voltage non-periodic impulse voltage, which often occurs in abnormal peaks and directly impacts the power supply part.
  • Surge is a secondary impact, the impact of common mode and differential mode interference of lightning on logic control and other parts. It is mostly based on signal-to-noise ratio and so on.
  • I don't understand, it's all nonsense.

Impulse voltage: It is mainly used to simulate the overvoltage of the power grid (the process of inductive load input and disconnection) to verify whether the gap and insulation of the charging pile can withstand the specified transient overvoltage. EFT test can be performed.

Surges primarily simulate lightning strikes.
