Microchip Launches New 8-Channel Flashtec® PCIe® Gen 4 Enterprise-Class NVMe™ SSD Controller

As data centers support more artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) workloads, the market needs cloud-scale infrastructure with wider storage bandwidth and higher storage density per rack. As a result, the market trend is to adopt smaller and PCIe® Gen4-enabled non-volatile memory express (NVMe™) SSDs in industry standards such as M.2 and the new enterprise and data center SSD form factor (EDSFF) E1.S launched by the Storage Networking Industry Association (SINA). These SSDs require controllers with small size and low power consumption to drive NAND flash to its maximum potential while maintaining the rich feature set and reliability required of such enterprise-class NVMe SSDs. Microchip Technology Inc. (Microchip Technology) announced the addition of the Flashtec® family, the Flashtec NVMe 3108 PCIe Gen 4 enterprise-class NVMe SSD controller. The 8-channel Flashtec NVMe 3108 complements the 16-channel Flashtec NVMe 3016 and provides a complete set of PCIe Gen 4 NVMe SSD solutions to meet various storage requirements in the data center.


Microchip's new Flashtec NVMe 3108 PCIe Gen 4 NVMe SSD controller supports a wide range of compact SSDs with high energy efficiency, excellent performance and high reliability, while providing industry-leading security features. Flashtec NVMe 3108 delivers over 1 million input/output operations per second (IOPS) and over 6 GB per second of continuous bandwidth under random workload conditions. The new solution provides end-to-end enterprise-class data integrity with high reliability and stringent security features, such as secure boot with hardware root of trust, ensuring that data center operators can provide the highest level of available data security. The 8 programmable flash channel controllers are coupled with an extremely powerful error correction engine to support next-generation high-layer count triple-level cell (TLC) and quad-level cell (QLC) NAND technology to meet the needs of future memory development in advance.

The flexibility of Flashtec NVMe 3108 comes from the programmable multi-core Arm® subsystem. Combined with multiple hardware acceleration engines, users can optimize their SSD solutions to adapt to a variety of applications, including SSDs that support single root IO virtualization technology (SR-IOV), partitioned namespace SSDs, key-value SSDs, and open channel SSDs, while maintaining the required performance. In addition, Flashtec NVMe 3108 supports dual-port working mode, providing high availability solutions for external storage system applications.

The Flashtec NVMe 3108 is part of Microchip's complete end-to-end suite of storage infrastructure and endpoint solutions for PCIe Gen 4. The suite includes the FlashtecNVMe 3016 16-channel NVMe SSD controller, the Switchtec™ family of PCIe Gen 4 switches and fabric solutions, and SmartRAID and SmartHBA PCIe Gen 4 tri-mode storage solutions.
In addition to storage, Microchip provides total system solutions for data center infrastructure manufacturers, including memory, timing and synchronization systems, standalone secure boot, secure firmware and authentication, wireless products, touch displays for configuring and monitoring data center equipment, and predictive fan controllers.

Microchip's complete software development tool package includes Microchip's reference firmware (with optional hardened firmware modules), software simulation tools, debugging tools (such as Microchip's Chiplink diagnostic tools), evaluation boards and reference designs, global support and a full set of auxiliary tools.
