Microchip launches first low-power digital-to-analog converter with integrated nonvolatile memory to simplify handheld device design
“The trend in handheld devices and other portable systems is to deliver more functionality in smaller, simpler designs,” said Bryan J. Liddiard, vice president of Microchip’s mixed-signal and linear products division. “Our first digital-to-analog converters help achieve this goal by reducing processor overhead during power-up and providing the channel density, low power consumption and integration required in today’s compact systems, which can operate for longer periods of time using smaller, lighter batteries.”
Unlike DACs that do not integrate non-volatile memory, the MCP47/48FxBx8 DACs store user-customized configuration data even when powered off. At power-on, all eight channels are configured to predefined states without incurring overhead on the system processor. This series integrates the reference voltage source into the DAC, reducing the overall size and complexity of the system while providing the necessary control to meet the critical timing requirements for safely driving all power outputs. In addition, this series provides SPI and I2C serial interfaces to provide designers with maximum device communication flexibility.
The operating voltage range of the DAC is 1.8V to 5.5V, and the combination of a lower minimum operating voltage and higher power efficiency improves thermal performance and reliability. The new DAC products also provide power-on/power-off reset protection and the industry's fastest 5 microsecond settling time, and can operate over a larger (-40°C to +125°C) temperature range required by industrial and automotive applications.
Availability
The MCP47/48FxBx8 family of DACs is available now for volume production. The new family includes 8-, 10- and 12-bit resolution devices in 20-lead VQFN 5 x 5 mm and 20-lead TSSOP packages.
