[Video] Using Dialog ZVS technology to reduce the size of 100W+ charger by half
Traditional high-power AC-DC power supplies are usually large and bulky. This is because many larger components are required to provide high power, and more space is required to prevent excessive hot spots and dissipate heat.
No one likes bulky power adapters and thick, complicated wires. Everyone hopes that the next generation of power supplies will be small, light, and charge quickly.
Dialog's patented ZVS (Zero Voltage Switching) technology provides a unique digital approach to achieve higher power in ultra-compact power adapters. Our ZVS technology uses higher switching frequencies, up to 200 kHz, allowing for smaller passive components and, most importantly, smaller transformers. It also efficiently recycles energy, minimizing heat generation.
Power supplies using Dialog’s ZVS technology can significantly reduce switching losses and enable the use of low-cost silicon MOSFETs while also being forward compatible with GaN power stages.
Our ZVS solution is also compatible with Dialog’s secondary-side interface controllers, integrating regulation, synchronous rectification, and supports nearly all fast-charging protocols, including: USB Power Delivery 3.0 + PPS, Qualcomm Quick Charge™ 4+, Samsung AFC, Huawei FCP, Huawei SuperCharge™, other OEM proprietary protocols, etc.
Standard secondary-side controllers use complex analog compensation schemes. Dialog’s advanced ZVS digital control technology uses a built-in digital compensator, simplifying the design process and further reducing the number of external components. This makes the entire circuit design quick and easy while achieving accurate regulation and fast transient response.
In addition to being much smaller, power adapters designed with Dialog’s ZVS technology also reduce carbon emissions and have a standby power rating of as low as 20mW, so power consumption is very low when the power adapter remains plugged into an outlet.
At Dialog Semiconductor, we take safety very seriously. That’s why all our ZVS controllers offer a wide range of protection features, including: overvoltage protection, overcurrent protection, overtemperature protection, common protection, input power-on/undervoltage protection, VSENSE/ISENSE short circuit protection, output short circuit protection, AC unplug detection, etc.
The new 65W power adapter on the right in the above picture uses our complete ZVS control solution, which is 50% smaller and achieves 94% efficiency, making it very light and easy to carry.
Power adapters designed using Dialog ZVS products eliminate bulky brick-style housings and AC cords, replacing them with a single, compact plug-style adapter, allowing users to carry a small power adapter to charge any mobile device.
Dialog's innovative ZVS technology is a complete solution for achieving low-cost, ultra-small, lightweight and easily portable power supplies ranging from 20W to over 100W.
