Unlike ADCs, which require an FFT processor to evaluate spectral purity, DACs produce analog outputs that can be directly studied using a traditional analog spectrum analyzer. The challenge in evaluating DACs is generating digital inputs ranging from single-tone sine waves to complex wideband CDMA signals. Digital sine waves can be generated using direct digital frequency synthesis techniques, but more complex digital signals require more sophisticated and expensive word generators. When evaluating high-speed DACs, the most important ac performance specifications include settling time, glitch impulse area, distortion, spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR), and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). This article first discusses time domain specifications and then frequency domain specifications.
