Actel launches new SoftConsole development tool [Copy link]

Actel Corporation has announced the release of SoftConsole, a free software development environment for the company's CoreMP7, the industry's only 32-bit ARM7 microcontroller core for field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). Based on the widely used open source Eclipse integrated design environment (IDE) and ARM7 GNU compiler and debugger, SoftConsole provides a cost-effective and reliable means for writing and debugging CoreMP7 software programming, allowing designers to quickly and easily develop embedded system applications based on Actel's single-chip Flash FPGAs.

SoftConsole is fully integrated with Actel's complete FPGA development tool environment, including the CoreConsole IP Development Platform (IDP) and Libero IDE, which are also available free of charge. Users can download the CoreMP7 core through the CoreConsole IDP, then use SoftConsole to write and debug software programming and run it on the CoreMP7. These three development tools provide Actel customers with all the features they need to develop their CoreMP7 applications on Actel's mixed-signal Fusion? programmable system-on-chip (PSC) and low-cost ProASIC3 FPGA families. Mike Thompson, senior manager of

IP marketing[S] at Actel,
said: "The SoftConsole tool allows designers to accelerate development by leveraging their existing knowledge of the Eclipse IDE and the ARM7 GNU compiler and debugger tools. Because these tools are widely used and mature, they provide a high level of confidence in the development of CoreMP7 software programming."

In addition to the Eclipse IDE and ARM7 compiler, SoftConsole also includes the GNU debugger and emulation tools for CoreMP7. The tool also supports the import of memory maps and drivers for Actel CoreConsole IDP, which can further simplify programming development; it can also be used with Actel's FlashPro3 programmer for programming and memory debugging. SoftConsole initially supports only CoreMP7, but support for Core8051 and other Actel-supported processor and microcontroller cores will be added in the future.

Users can download SoftConsole for free from the Actel website at: http://www.actel.com/products/tools/softconsole/ .
