Today, lighting accounts for nearly one-fifth of U.S. electricity use¹, the vast majority of which still uses inefficient (< 5%) incandescent lamps. Promoting energy-saving lighting technology will significantly save electricity, reduce carbon dioxide emissions, and reduce the need for new power plants.
For example, the U.S. Department of Energy estimates that replacing recessed spotlights with LEDs alone will save 81.2 trillion watt hours (TWh) of electricity per year, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 6.7 million homes. In summary, the electricity saved by this alone can reduce the construction of 13 1000MW thermal power plants².
MR16 halogen lamps are widely used to replace incandescent lamps in commercial and household lighting due to their higher efficiency. The power consumption of commonly used MR16 lamps ranges from 10W to 50W, and their luminous flux ranges from 150 lumens (lm) to 800lm. Therefore, a typical MR16 halogen lamp has an efficiency of approximately 15 lumens per watt (lm/W) or a luminous efficiency of 15%. While low-efficiency incandescent lamps have improved, the MR16 halogen lamp still leaves a lot to be desired.
Today's LED technology provides a cost-effective, MR16-compliant solid-state lighting alternative to halogen lamps. For example, LedEngin™’s latest generation of 5W (single chip, 4mm × 4mm package) and 10W (quad chip, 7mm × 7mm package) high-power LEDs have typical values at a current of 1000mA and a junction temperature (T J ) of +120°C The light efficiency is 45lm/W. Under actual operating conditions, this indicator is equivalent to the typical luminous flux of 155lm (1000mA, T J = +120°C, 5W package) and 345lm (700mA, T J = +120°C, 10W package). These LEDs save 50% of power consumption compared to halogen lamps under the same brightness conditions.
In addition, the usage time of typical halogen lamps is within 2000hrs, and LedEngin expects that its LEDs can maintain a fairly high (90%) light intensity after long-term operation (100,000hrs, T J = +120°C). The longer service life of LEDs effectively reduces the lamp replacement rate during the product's validity period, thereby reducing maintenance and usage costs.
