At the launch conference in September, Apple announced that the iPhone 14 series supports satellite communication functions, but unlike Huawei Mate50, which can be used as soon as it was released, Apple has been slow to launch it.
This important feature finally arrived early this morning.
Apple announced on its official website that it will now provide satellite emergency rescue (SOS) services to iPhone 14 series users in the United States and Canada, allowing emergency communications even when there is no signal.
The initial launch will only support these two countries, but will be expanded to France, Germany, Ireland and the United Kingdom in December this year.
It should be noted that Apple, like Huawei, has not opened this service completely for free. It has previously stated that it will be free for two years, while Huawei has revealed that it will provide 30 pieces of content for free every month in the initial stage.
As for the later charging standards, the two manufacturers have made the same choice and will not announce it for the time being.
It is reported that in order to realize this satellite communication service, US$450 million has been allocated from the Advanced Manufacturing Fund to develop key infrastructure to support satellite emergency rescue (SOS) services.
Most of the funds went to satellite service provider Globalstar.
To help everyone learn how to use it, Apple has also launched a detailed tutorial on its official website.
First of all, without WiFi and cellular network, find an open location where you can directly see the sky. Obstructions from buildings and trees will affect the connection.
The steps for models with this service enabled are as follows:
1. Open the Find My app
2. Click on the Me tab
3. Swipe up and see "Positioning via satellite" and click Send my location.
After choosing to send, just like Huawei's Beidou satellite messages, a handheld satellite search process is required. You need to adjust the angle of the phone according to the interface prompts. After connecting to the satellite, you can send the message, which can be completed in about 15 seconds.
At the same time, the iPhone will automatically send information such as the user's location, medical ID (if set up), and battery level to emergency agencies.
Compared with Huawei, Apple's satellite emergency rescue function has a disadvantage, which is that it can only contact emergency agencies, and cannot select contacts independently, and cannot be used to communicate with family and friends.
