On the morning of May 7, some users reported that there seemed to be a bug in AirTag's anti-tracking system recently. There were no unknown AirTags around them, but they received alarm reminders.

According to the Wall Street Journal, there have been some user feedback on Twitter, Reddit, Facebook and other platforms, which they call "phantom AirTags". Users will receive reminders of unknown AirTags around them - this was originally Apple's anti-tracking measure to prevent people from abusing AirTags. This time, there is actually no such thing, maybe it's just that there is a problem with AirTag's anti-tracking system.

One person who received a "phantom AirTag" alert at home said the notification was scary and said the AirTag's movement on the map "looked very strange." He was unable to find any maliciously placed AirTags near his home.

In early May, a family went to Disney and encountered a similar situation. Although they received an AirTag anti-tracking alert, they were unable to find any trackers in their personal belongings.

The map reminder on the "Phantom AirTag" alert has straight red lines radiating outward from the user's location. If the AirTag is moving along these paths, it will pass through the middle of city streets, through built-up areas, and even penetrate walls.

An Apple spokesperson said the alerts could be caused by Wi-Fi signals picked up by the iPhone temporarily confusing its location services, or AirTags could cause false alarms in densely populated areas (as may have been the case with Disney).

It is not clear how widespread the problem is. Perhaps Apple has made AirTag anti-tracking settings too sensitive? Many media comments previously believed that AirTags were prone to abuse, and some people did use them to track their ex-girlfriends. Apple subsequently adjusted AirTag's anti-tracking strategy, such as improving reminders. If an unknown AirTag is around, it will clearly inform the user that "AirTag has been detected" instead of the implicit "unknown accessory has been detected."
