IT Home reported on March 30 that according to an internal memo obtained by MacRumors, Apple will no longer provide repair services for reported lost iPhones.

Apple Stores and authorized service providers have been notified that repair personnel will no longer repair iPhones that have been reported as lost through the GSMA. The company is now asking technicians to refuse to repair lost iPhones if they are found in the MobileGenius or GSX systems they use to service customers.

The GSMA Device Registry is a global database where users can report their device lost if it is stolen or lost. For example, if someone reports their phone stolen to law enforcement, authorities may tag the device with the GSMA, which can help identify the lost phone.

Apple's policy is designed to prevent its repairers from servicing models from unscrupulous individuals or unknown sources, which prohibits technicians from unlocking the device's activation lock unless the customer can provide their proof of purchase. In addition, Apple will refuse to repair if the user puts their device in "lost mode" through "Find My".

IT Home learned that Apple has not yet publicly confirmed MacRumors' findings, and has not even responded yet.
