Operator Vodafone has revealed that it is using phone boxes across the UK to boost the performance and reliability of 4G connections, reports Neowin. In Bournemouth, London, Reading and Winchester, the boxes have been fitted with tiny 4G devices - the nature of the hardware means capacity is boosted without bringing more clutter to the streets.
Andrea Dona, Vodafone UK's Director of Networks and Development, said of the new hardware:
"Using these phone boxes to house micro 4G technology means we can keep up with demand and make the most of existing structures on our streets. Adding more 4G coverage is important to us and my customers as we prepare to switch off older 3G technology next year."
The company said nine phone booths in the aforementioned areas have been installed with this micro 4G technology. As more people turn to data-intensive services such as TikTok and YouTube, Vodafone expects data demand to continue to grow. Innovative measures such as turning phone booths into 4G transmitters will help handle the data load.
While nine phone boxes may not sound like a lot, Vodafone has previously rolled out similar technology to phone boxes in Brighton, Edwardian, Edinburgh, Guildford, Harrow, Oxford, Polzeath Beach and Sennan Cove Beach.
