On January 16, AMD 3D V-Cache technology has been under development for many years and was officially announced in 2021. This technology uses chip stacking technology to increase the CPU cache capacity several times, greatly improving processor performance without changing the core area. Foreign media Chips and Cheese tested AMD processors equipped with 3D V-Cache and measured the cache latency differences between the new EPYC processor and the old one.

Foreign media used the AMD EPYC 7V73X (Milan-X) series to compare with the older EPYC 7763 (Milan-X) processor. The former is equipped with 768MB L3 cache, while the latter is equipped with 256MB L3 cache, which is only one-third of the former.

EPYC 7V73X has 64 cores and 128 threads, a base frequency of 2.2GHz and a boost frequency of 3.5GHz.

Test results show that 3D V-Cache technology will slightly increase the latency of L3 cache, and the latency of Milan-X will increase by 3-4 cycles. The performance improvement brought by the large cache offsets the slight increase in latency. Although the main frequency of EPYC 7V73X is lower, its performance is stronger.

AMD's new Milan-X series server processors were officially released at the end of 2021. They still use the Zen 3 processor architecture. The flagship model 7773X has 64 cores and 128 threads, a TDP of 280W, and is priced at over US$10,000.
