According to Nikkei News, Apple is establishing a closer partnership with TSMC in hopes of reducing its reliance on Qualcomm, and the company plans to have TSMC manufacture 5G iPhone basebands starting in 2023.
People familiar with the matter said that Apple plans to use TSMC's 4-nanometer process to mass-produce its first self-developed 5G baseband. It is also developing its own RF, millimeter wave components and power management chips. In the latest iPhone 13, these components are all provided by Qualcomm.
Apple has always wanted to get rid of its dependence on Qualcomm and want to have stronger control over the semiconductors in the iPhone. Qualcomm recently confirmed that its share of iPhone baseband orders will drop to around 20% in 2023.
Sources said that for the new 5G iPhone baseband, Apple is using TSMC's 5-nanometer chip production to design and test the production of the chip, and will use more advanced 4-nanometer technology for mass production in the future, but commercialization will not be achieved until 2023, partly because global operators need time to verify and test the new modem chip.
Apple declined to comment for this story, while TSMC did not respond to a request for comment.
