According to Reuters, U.S. Senator Dick Durbin told reporters that South Korea's Samsung SDI is considering building a battery plant in central Illinois.

Durbin said Samsung is in discussions to build a battery plant in Normal, Ill., according to a video of the news conference posted on the Pantagraph website. Electric vehicle startup Rivian has a plant in Normal and said in April that Samsung SDI would supply batteries for its electric vehicles.

“We are competing for a large Samsung battery factory. The delegation came from South Korea this week and I talked to them. We want this Samsung factory to be built next door to Rivian, so this battery factory will also create thousands of jobs,” Durbin said.

Last month, Reuters reported that Samsung SDI may build a battery factory in the United States and that Samsung SDI has been in talks with electric vehicle makers such as Stellantis and Rivian to supply batteries.

Sources said Samsung is considering investing at least 3 trillion won to produce batteries for Stellantis and at least 1 trillion won to produce batteries for Rivian.

The source also revealed that Samsung SDI has not yet decided whether to build a joint factory with an automaker.

Samsung SDI executives have recently been in Detroit discussing battery supply with Stellantis, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Samsung SDI has electric vehicle battery factories in South Korea, China and Hungary, supplying batteries to customers such as BMW, Ford, Volvo and Volkswagen.
