Samsung Electronics recently announced that it has developed the latest RF technology based on the 8nm process. Compared with the 14nm process, Samsung's 8nm RF process can reduce the RF chip area by 35% and increase the power by 35%.
According to South Korean media THE ELEC, Samsung will also provide 5G RF chips that support multi-channel and multi-antenna integration in the future. Samsung said that the chip will support Sub-6GHz and millimeter waves. The new process is expected to win more foundry orders for Samsung.
According to data from market research firm TrendForce, Samsung's foundry business had a global market share of 17% in the first quarter, which is still far behind TSMC's 55%.
The South Korean company began providing RF chip foundry services in 2015, initially using 28nm process and 12-inch wafer production, and began providing 14nm production process in 2017. Samsung said that since 2017, the company has shipped more than 500 million mobile RF chips.
