According to a support document published late last week (via MacGeneration), Apple plans to merge its iCloud Documents and Data service with iCloud Drive starting in May 2022.

‌iCloud Drive‌ and ‌iCloud ‌Documents & Data share the basic functionality of backing up data from apps. However, ‌iCloud‌ Documents & Data is often a cumbersome, confusing experience. In contrast, ‌iCloud Drive‌ is more unified, allowing users to access their files and content through the Files app on all their devices.

As Apple explains, starting next May, users who use ‌iCloud‌ Documents and Data will automatically have their accounts migrated to ‌iCloud Drive‌. However, once the merger occurs, users will have to manually enable ‌iCloud Drive‌ to view their files.

‌iCloud Drive‌ was launched in 2014 to give Apple users a unified, seamless way to keep all their files, documents, and more in sync across all their devices.
