The latest report from market research firm Canalys shows that smartphone shipments in India increased by 11% to 37.1 million units in the first quarter of 2021.
From the manufacturer ranking, Xiaomi maintained its leading position in the market with 10.5 million units shipped, a year-on-year increase of 2%. Samsung ranked second with 7 million units sold, a year-on-year increase of 11%. Vivo shipped 6.7 million units, ranking third. Next were OPPO and Realme, with shipments of 4.7 million and 4.3 million units respectively. It is worth mentioning that four of the top five manufacturers are from China, with a combined market share of 73%.
Canalys analyst Sanyam Chaurasia said: "The first quarter was a celebratory one for the Indian market, with all five major vendors posting growth. Xiaomi, for example, continued to pursue its multi-brand strategy in its well-established online channels and is now implementing new initiatives to strengthen its offline channels."
Looking ahead, Canalys expects smartphone shipments in India to plummet in the second quarter of 2021 due to the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.
