Early this morning, along with iOS/iPadOS 14.4 and watchOS 7.3, software version v14.4 for HomePod/HomePod mini was also released. The most important feature of this update is the new relay function for HomePod mini equipped with U1 chip.

When Apple launched the HomePod mini, it introduced that this speaker is equipped with the same U1 ultra-wideband chip as the iPhone, which can achieve a deeper level of interaction with an iPhone equipped with a U1 chip (iPhone 11 or above), such as more precise visual, auditory, and tactile feedback when the iPhone is close. In Apple's words: "You can feel that the two devices are actually connected, with music flowing from one device to another."

Unlike the first-generation relay function that relies on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, the new relay function with the U1 chip will pop up a pop-up window when the iPhone is close to the HomePod mini, accompanied by vibration feedback of varying intensities depending on the distance. When the distance is close enough, the phone will display a complete playback page, and the music will be switched to the HomePod mini. The overall experience is more precise than the "relay" function without the U1 chip.

In addition, the HomePod mini equipped with the U1 chip also has a "personalized listening suggestion function": as long as you hold your iPhone close to the HomePod mini, personalized suggestions will automatically appear on the iPhone screen. You don't need to unlock your iPhone, just move your fingers and the song you want to listen to will be played.

If you have a HomePod mini at home, you might as well upgrade it to version 14.4 and try the new relay feature.
