According to Yonhap News Agency, on the afternoon of the 18th local time, the Seoul High Court of South Korea pronounced a retrial verdict on Lee Jae-yong's "cronyism" case, sentencing him to 2 years and 6 months in prison. Lee Jae-yong was arrested in court.
Lee Jae-yong, 52, is the vice chairman of Samsung Electronics and the de facto head of Samsung Group. Previously, the prosecution asked the court to sentence him to nine years.
According to prosecution charges, in February 2017, Lee Jae-yong was suspected of bribing former South Korean President Park Geun-hye and Choi Soon-sil to help them inherit management rights, with the amount of bribes reaching 29.8 billion won (about 175 million yuan).
The first instance court found Lee Jae-yong guilty of some bribery crimes and sentenced him to five years in prison. The second instance court sentenced him to two and a half years in prison and four years of probation. Lee Jae-yong was released in court. In August 2019, the Supreme Court of South Korea, in its final judgment, revoked the second instance court's verdict on Lee Jae-yong and other suspects, Park Geun-hye and Choi Soon-sil, and sent the case back to the Seoul High Court for retrial.
