On January 8, Sunny Optical released an announcement on the shipment volumes of its major products in December 2020. For optical parts, shipments of glass spherical lenses increased by 19.7% year-on-year to 4.643 million units, and a 60.8% increase from the previous month; shipments of mobile phone lenses increased by 2.5% year-on-year to 130 million units, and a 1.3% increase from the previous month; shipments of automotive lenses increased by 37.3% year-on-year to 5.736 million units, and a decrease of 14.2% from the previous month; shipments of other lenses increased by 35.9% year-on-year to 8.005 million units, and a 1.4% increase from the previous month.
In the optoelectronic products segment, shipments of mobile phone camera modules decreased by 23.9% year-on-year to 45.291 million units, and decreased by 3.4% month-on-month; shipments of other optoelectronic products increased by 2.8% year-on-year to 4.406 million units; in the optical instrument segment, shipments of microscopes increased by 2.3% year-on-year to 19,800 units.
Sunny Optical said that the shipment volume of automotive lenses increased by 37.3% year-on-year, mainly due to the increase in the company's automotive lens market share; it decreased by 14.2% month-on-month, mainly due to the impact of the Christmas holiday. The shipment volume of mobile phone camera modules decreased by 23.9% year-on-year, mainly due to the shortage of key components in the smartphone supply chain.
It is worth noting that not long ago, Tianfeng Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo published a report stating that if Sunny Optical Technology successfully ships Apple lenses in 2021, it is expected that the company will expand its Apple lens production capacity by at least 50% in 2022.
The report pointed out that Sunny Optical Technology's recent stock price performance has been strong and hit a record high, responding to the previous prediction that Sunny Optical Technology will ship iPad 5P lenses and iPhone 7P lenses in 2021. Kuo Ming-Chi said that he believes that the market has gradually agreed with the prediction that Sunny Optical Technology will start shipping iPhone lenses in 2021, which is one of the main reasons for the company's recent strong stock price performance and record highs. Although Sunny Optical Technology's shipment proportion in 2021 is still not high, the iPhone 7P wide-angle lens and iPad 5P lens account for about 10% and 15-20% of the shipment proportion respectively. But Kuo Ming-Chi predicts that if the company's shipment of Apple lenses in 2021 is smooth, it will further expand production by at least 50% in 2022.
