According to PR Newswire, OPPO recently announced that it has joined the HEVC Advance patent pool, through which OPPO will obtain licenses for more than 13,000 essential patents for implementing the HEVC/H.265 video codec standards worldwide.
Feng Ying, Senior Director of OPPO’s Intellectual Property Department, said: “The HEVC Advance Patent Pool managed by Access Advance is a patent licensing platform that is full of cooperation, committed to balancing the interests of licensors and licensees, and adhering to the FRAND principle. OPPO is pleased to join the HEVC Advance Patent Pool and looks forward to promoting the healthy development of the industry with our global partners.”
In addition, Access Advance CEO Peter Moller pointed out that as a global leading smart device company with many best-selling products and brands, OPPO's investment in R&D, innovation and intellectual property enables them to become a leading contributor in the development of multiple next-generation standards in the communications and media fields, including the next-generation video codec standard VVC.
It is reported that as an emerging patent pool, HEVC Advance has a more expensive licensing rate than the old patent pool MPEG LA. However, with the joining of big players such as Samsung, Huawei, MediaTek, and MediaTek, the queue of licensees is growing.
