According to sources cited by DigiTimes, the high-end iPad Pro models rumored to be released next year will support millimeter wave (mmWave) 5G.
Rumors have suggested that Apple plans to release a high-end 12.9-inch iPad Pro with a mini-LED display next year, and possibly an 11-inch mini-LED model as well, but details beyond that are scarce.
However, according to today’s report, Apple has successfully developed its own in-house mmWave AiP (antenna-in-package) modules for use in next year’s iPhone lineup, raising the possibility that the iPad’s next generation of models will also benefit from it.
Although the models were not specified, it is almost certain that these will be iPad Pro models since 5G is a high-end feature with higher production costs.
Millimeter wave 5G promises ultra-fast speeds over short distances, making it best suited for dense urban areas. In contrast, sub-6GHz 5G is generally slower than millimeter wave 5G, but the signal travels farther, allowing it to better serve suburban and rural areas.
According to DigiTimes, Apple's latest efforts in AiP module development indicate that Apple has taken a step towards internal development of RF front-end (RF-FEM) modules, with the ultimate goal of providing its own modem devices.
