For Apple, they are solving the biggest shortcoming of the iPhone, which is the problem of poor signal.
According to DigiTimes, Apple is increasing its investment in the research and development of its own antenna design, because this is even more important in the 5G era. If it blindly uses third-party solutions, it will inevitably fail.
In fact, Apple has already taken action in this year's iPhone 12. For example, the version sold in the US market is equipped with Apple's self-designed packaged antenna (Antenna-in-Package, AiP) to support millimeter wave (mmWave).
The report mentioned that Apple will expand this usage ratio in the iPhone 13 series, and the RF front-end module (RF-FEM) is also included in Apple’s future independent plans.
Industry insiders said that as 5G becomes more and more commercialized, it will drive more and more terminals to support this network, and the integration of RF-FEM will become higher and higher. When mobile phones require more and more RF-FEM devices, RF-FEM must increase its integration to control the actual size of the entire RF system within an appropriate range.
At present, some manufacturers are developing solutions that integrate low-noise amplifiers and switch modules, and Apple is also working in this direction, mainly focusing on self-research.
