According to Reuters, Apple's security chief was indicted on Monday local time for alleged bribery.

Prosecutors said he had pledged to donate 200 iPads to the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office in exchange for securing U.S. concealed carry permits for Apple employees.

The Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office said a grand jury indicted Apple Chief Security Officer Thomas Moyer, 50, and two officers from the sheriff's office.

The officers were accused of soliciting bribes when issuing concealed carry permits. In California, it is illegal to carry a concealed firearm without a permit, and county sheriffs have broad discretion over the issuance of guns.

Moyer's lawyers have said he is innocent, and Apple has said it conducted its own review and found no wrongdoing.

The indictment comes amid an ongoing Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office corruption investigation into the Sheriff's Office amid allegations that donations made to Sheriff Laurie Smith's 2018 reelection campaign were used in exchange for concealed weapons permits. The case is unrelated to Apple.

Moyer's attorney, Ed Swanson, said Moyer had sought weapons permits for some Apple security guards to protect executives and employees after shootings at other Silicon Valley tech companies, such as the 2018 shooting at YouTube's headquarters.

"They went through the process as normal," he said of the permit application, adding that the iPad donation had nothing to do with the permit. There was no bribe, no quid pro quo.
