In the early morning of November 11, Apple held its third event this fall. Undoubtedly, the protagonist of this event was the self-developed computer chip that Apple announced at the WWDC Developer Conference. After more than 4 months, the Mac equipped with this Apple self-developed chip finally came to us.
M1 is Apple's first self-developed chip and the first self-developed SoC chip used in the Mac series. M1 uses a 5nm process, has 16 billion transistors, and integrates CPU, GPU and cache. Four of the eight cores focus on high performance, and the other four have high performance. A single high-performance core can match the speed of the dual-core of the MacBook Air series, which also means that M1 is more efficient.
The four high-efficiency cores reduce the chip's power consumption to one-tenth of the previous level, but can provide performance similar to the current dual-core MacBook Air and reduce power consumption. The M1's integrated graphics card uses up to 8 cores, can run nearly 25,000 threads simultaneously, and has a data processing capacity of 2.6 trillion floating-point operations per second.
The neural network engine in the M1 chip uses a 16-core architecture and can perform 11 trillion operations per second, increasing the speed of machine learning by up to 15 times.
Apple Vice President and hardware engineer John Ternus said that the new MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro, and Mac mini will all be equipped with M1 chips. The Mac series will also gradually transition to a new series of chips designed by Apple, and the transition will be completed in about two years.
