This year's iPhone 12 series, with the support of the new MagSafe accessory standard, has finally gotten rid of the ancestral 7.5W "wireless slow charging". Now when using a MagSafe wireless charger, the charging power can reach up to 15W, but the iPhone 12 mini, which will be available for pre-order this week, may not enjoy this speed.


Recently, a support document about using MagSafe to charge the iPhone 12 series appeared on Apple's official US website. It stated that compared to the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max, the maximum power of the iPhone 12 mini when using the MagSafe wireless charger can only reach 12W, which is slower than the officially advertised 15W.

The document also recommends that users connect MagSafe to a power source in advance, rather than placing the iPhone 12 on the MagSafe charger and then connecting the MagSafe charger to a power source, because the iPhone 12 and MagSafe will perform safety verification before charging, and placing the iPhone 12 on it before MagSafe is connected to a power source will affect the integrity of the verification step.


In addition, since MagSafe does not come with a charging head, users need to prepare a USB-C power adapter with a power of more than 20W to use with it. Apple recommends that iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max users use a charging head with a power of at least 9V/2.22A or 9V/2.56A to power the MagSafe wireless charger, while iPhone 12 mini users only need to make sure the charger power is no less than 9V/2.03A.



It is worth mentioning that if the iPhone is connected to other Lightning accessories, MagSafe will not be able to turn on the fast charging mode, but will maintain the standard 7.5W output power.

From our previous tests , the body temperature of the iPhone 12 has a great impact on the performance of the MagSafe charging rate. In order to achieve the 15W peak, in addition to using a 20W or higher power charging head, the body temperature of the iPhone must also be low enough, otherwise the output power of wireless charging will remain at around 9W.
