According to thelec, Samsung Corning Advanced Glass (hereinafter referred to as "Samsung Corning") has hardly applied for any patents in the past 7 years. The company actively applied for patents in its early days, but this is no longer the case and it is now more of a production-focused entity.
It is reported that Samsung Corning is a joint venture between Samsung Display and Corning, with each party holding half of the shares. The company has been producing glass substrates for OLED panels.
Public data shows that Samsung Corning has a total of 27 patents in South Korea, 21 of which were transferred from Corning. Of the remaining six patents, two were submitted to its parent company Samsung Display in 2012 and 2013. Samsung Display recently gave up the rights to these two patents, and they are now fully owned by Samsung Corning. The other four were applied for by Samsung Corning in the early days of the company.
From 2014 to 2020, Samsung Corning applied for almost no patents in South Korea and the United States. Of the four patents submitted after 2014, two were rejected, one was withdrawn by the company, and only one patent is pending.
A person familiar with the matter said that it is very rare for no patents to be applied for for seven consecutive years. Either Samsung Corning is used as a production company, its parent company can provide patent protection for it, or the company applies for patents under a different name.
This is in stark contrast to Corning Precision Materials, formerly known as Samsung Corning Precision Materials, which was sold to Corning in 2014. The company has aggressively applied for 1,048 new patents since its founding in 1993.
