Recently, Nokia was awarded a contract to build a 4G network on the moon.
According to foreign media reports, NASA recently awarded Nokia $14.1 million to deploy a cellular network on the moon. This grant is part of a $370 million contract signed under NASA's "Critical Point" selection project.
The contract has been awarded to Nokia's US subsidiary, and according to Jim Reuter, NASA's associate administrator for space operations, the cellular service will enable astronauts, rovers, lunar landers and habitats to communicate with each other.
The 4G network Nokia will build will far exceed the forms of communications used by early lunar missions. Nokia's plan is to build a 4G/LTE network and eventually transition to 5G.
This isn’t Nokia’s first attempt to launch an LTE network on the moon. It had planned to launch an LTE network at the Apollo 17 landing site in 2018 in partnership with German space company PTScientists and Vodafone UK, but that plan never came to fruition.
