Amazon has begun sending emails to owners of its Echo Buds true wireless earbuds, reminding these customers to update their device firmware as soon as possible to avoid "potential security risks." Amazon said in the email: "We recently determined that in rare cases, Echo Buds may overheat in the charging case."

According to Amazon, the latest firmware update eliminates the issue and improves the long-term performance of the Echo Buds' batteries. Amazon is calling on anyone who bought Echo Buds as gifts for others to give them a heads-up about the situation. Amazon's investigation into the matter was prompted by customer reports of Echo Buds overheating while in their boxes. So far, there have been a small number of cases with no reports of injuries related to overheating issues. Amazon declined to specify how specifically the Echo Buds react when they overheat, such as whether they would smoke, melt, potentially catch fire, or if the heat would simply be uncomfortable.

"An Amazon spokesperson said the update makes the device more efficient and monitors performance to optimize how and when it charges. Both improve the long-term health of the battery. Users must update to firmware version 318119151 or above. Amazon automatically applies the update when the Echo Buds are paired with a phone. It appears that in some cases, the Echo Buds were charging a little too hard in the case.

The earbuds offer up to five hours of continuous battery life, or 20 hours total when you count charging the case. You can also charge them for 15 minutes to get up to two hours of listening time. There's nothing special or technically superior about these compared to the competition. The Echo Buds charge over Micro USB. The Echo Buds currently have an August 14th shipping date listed on Amazon's website. At least for now, the page doesn't mention overheating issues.
