Thailand's largest mobile operator Advanced Info Service Pcl said on Tuesday that Huawei was one of five companies bidding to build its 5G core network as it steps up investment this year, Reuters reported.
Thailand, the oldest ally of the United States in Asia, said it would not exclude Chinese suppliers from its 5G infrastructure construction, but would remain vigilant to any security issues. AIS is nearing the final stage of selecting suppliers, and the list includes Ericsson, Nokia, ZTE, Samsung and Huawei.
AIS President Hui Weng Cheong said the company was selecting suitable suppliers and planned to invest 45 billion baht ($1.42 billion) in infrastructure this year and build its first 5G core network in the capital Bangkok and the industrial hub Eastern Special Economic Zone this month.
AIS announced last week that it would cooperate with Huawei to sell 5G smartphones produced by Huawei. Hui Weng Cheong said that the US allegations against Huawei have not been confirmed, but AIS will restrict suppliers by adding important clauses to protect itself and prevent possible security risks.
