According to Korean media thelec, a person familiar with the matter revealed that due to the impact of the new crown epidemic, Samsung Electronics' smartphone production will be reduced by 40 million units from the original target.

Samsung’s smartphone shipment target was 280 million units at the beginning of this year, but this target has now been lowered by 15% to 240 million units. In addition, the target for total mobile device shipments, including feature phones and tablets, has been reduced from the original 330 million units to 280 million units, the person familiar with the matter said.

Samsung was hit by a slowdown in production at Chinese suppliers in the first quarter as the coronavirus pandemic caused production problems and shrunk demand. In the first half of this year, Samsung produced only about 100 million phones and tablets, a sharp drop of 58% year-on-year.

Samsung plans to produce 180 million mobile devices in the second half of this year to achieve the new goal. The company has recently notified suppliers of the change in plans. In July alone, the company plans to produce 33 million units, and then 30 million units per month.

The report said Samsung is continuously sending engineers to Vietnam to minimize possible accidents. Samsung also plans to operate its mobile phone factories in South Korea, the United States, Vietnam and India at full capacity to meet the new shipment targets.
