T-Mobile US has signed a 5G roaming agreement with Alaska operator GCI, a move it said will make it the first company to offer the next-generation service to customers in parts of all 50 states.

The partnership will provide T-Mobile customers with 5G network coverage in Anchorage, Alaska's largest city, and allow GCI customers to roam in other parts of the United States through T-Mobile's network.

T-Mobile Chief Technology Officer Neville Ray said the agreement would solidify its position in the next-generation technology and help it "deliver a meaningful 5G experience to our customers."

GCI President and COO Greg Chapados called the deal a "huge milestone" and a "win for both companies."

GCI, in partnership with Ericsson, deployed its first 5G base stations in Anchorage in April and said last month it was 45% complete with its plan to upgrade 70 base stations in the city by the end of 2020. The operator is using a combination of 600MHz, 700MHz, 850MHz, PCS and AWS spectrum.

GCI said the Anchorage deployment will serve as a model for 5G upgrades in other cities, which it said could include Juneau, Fairbanks and "other fiber-served communities" in the state.
