The South Korean government said on Tuesday it will invest about 1.1 trillion won ($896 million) to develop "highly automated" car technologies to lead the growth of the auto market, according to Yonhap News Agency. According to the South Korean Ministry of Science and Technology, the investment requires the development of Level 4 self-driving cars.

The International Society of Automotive Engineers divides autonomous driving into five levels from L1 to L5, with L5 being the highest level of fully automated driving, and L4 being highly automated, where all driving operations can be completed by an unmanned driving system in a limited road and environment. Currently, most autonomous vehicles on the road are still at level L2, providing only driving assistance for multiple operations such as steering and acceleration and deceleration, with the rest being operated by the driver.
