Recently, the global patent protection community OIN (Open Invention Network) announced that Huawei, the world's largest diversified electronics and communications company, has become a licensee and member of the OIN community. According to the OIN official website, in addition to Huawei, companies such as Tencent and Alibaba are also members of the community. So far, the community has more than 3,200 members.
According to the official website, OIN is a shared defensive patent pool with the mission of protecting Linux. It was established in 2005. OIN has strong industry support and has been supported by companies such as Google, IBM, NEC, Philips, Red Hat, Sony and SUSE. Any company, project or developer engaged in Linux, GNU, Android or any other Linux-related software development can join OIN for free. OIN members can cross-license Linux system-related technologies, and allow OIN licensees to use all patents and applications under OIN for free.
Huawei is a global leader in ICT infrastructure and owns a large number of intellectual property rights, especially communication technology (ICT) patents. At the same time, Huawei is also an important contributor to the Linux core program. According to Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation, Huawei has always been a top contributor to the Linux core and other key open source projects, and is also a platinum member of the Linux Foundation.
Joining OIN is a win-win situation for Huawei and OIN. For OIN, Huawei's strong patent strength will make the scope of patents shared by OIN more extensive. And for Huawei, under the repeated restrictions of the United States, opening up patent cooperation with large companies around the world is undoubtedly a good way to protect itself.
Ding Jianxin, head of Huawei's Global Intellectual Property Department, said, "To promote technological development, we are always open to working with different types of industry organizations, both U.S. and non-U.S. industry organizations. We are very pleased to join OIN, which ensures the open source community's ability to innovate on current and next-generation platforms. This brings a benefit to the open source community around the world, which is to ensure that the best technology wins and is not stifled by patent aggressors."
Keith Bergelt, CEO of OIN, pointed out that open source software transcends geopolitical boundaries. Like the open source community it supports, OIN is a global organization. Although OIN is headquartered in the United States, nearly half of its founding members are in Asia and two-sevenths are in Europe.
