Apple has acquired Xnor.ai, a Seattle startup specializing in on-device artificial intelligence (AI), according to people familiar with the matter.

Sources said Apple acquired Xnor.ai for about $200 million. Although Apple and Xnor.ai declined to comment on the news, the Xnor.ai website has basically been offline.

Xnor.ai's technology allows companies to execute deep learning algorithms locally on smartphones and other portable devices, rather than requiring these calculations to be performed in a cloud service. Xnor promises complete confidentiality of data, with low memory load and energy requirements. Given Apple's strong interest in protecting personal privacy, the company's acquisition of Xnor.ai is not surprising. In the past, Apple has acquired other similar artificial intelligence companies such as Turi.

Apple may integrate Xnor.ai's technology into future iPhone models to improve Siri and other tasks based on artificial intelligence and machine learning.
