Yesterday, OPPO held a VOOC flash charging technology communication meeting in Shenzhen, announcing the commercialization of 65W Super VOOC/30W VOOC 4.0 and 30W Wireless VOOC full-line solutions. There is one point worth noting: OPPO's 65W charger uses GaN. What is the significance of OPPO's move? An industry insider made some analysis.
First, let’s understand what GaN is?
GaN is gallium nitride, which belongs to power devices, ranging from MOSFET in chargers to IGBT in high-speed trains. Overall, the global output value is not particularly large, but not small either, because this thing is a core chip and plays a key role in many equipment. OPPO uses it to replace traditional silicon-based MOSFET.
Next up is the role of GaN
At present, the main role of GaN in charging is to improve the power conversion efficiency, reduce the heat of the charging head, and help miniaturize the charger through its high-frequency switching speed characteristics. OPPO also took advantage of this feature to ensure that the size of the Super VOOC 2.0 charger is not much different from the previous VOOC charger.
Finally, the significance of OPPO using GaN
The application of GaN allows OPPO's 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 charger to maintain a portable size and also provides higher efficiency for 65W charging. In this way, you can consider not bringing a power bank when you go out, but only a charging head.
OPPO is not the first domestic manufacturer to use GaN, but it is the first domestic mobile phone manufacturer to use GaN as a standard technology. Under the leadership of OPPO, domestic manufacturers are expected to further popularize GaN technology and further miniaturize chargers.
