According to arstechnica, AMD's new series of Ryzen 3000 desktop CPUs will use a 7nm manufacturing process, ranging from the $749 3950x to the relatively modest $199 3600X, AMD is ready to compete with Intel.

What's really interesting is that this time around, AMD thinks Ryzen 3000 isn't just cheaper, it also has performance and power advantages: the Ryzen 7 3700x is priced at $329, while Intel's i7-9700k is priced at around $410.

And according to AMD's slides, the Ryzen 7 3700x also outperforms the i7-9700k while using less power and generating less heat.

Even when comparing absolute flagship CPUs, the 16-core/32-thread Ryzen 3950x only has a 105W TDP, while Intel's 32-thread i7-7960x has a 165W TDP.

In the war between AMD and Intel, one thing remains constant: Intel still has a single-threaded performance advantage, while Ryzen has a multi-threaded performance advantage. (For example, the Ryzen 3700x has 16 threads, while the i7-9700k has only 8.)

The single-threaded performance advantage is of little help in gaming, where gaming benchmarks tend to choke on single-threaded performance, but AMD says its multi-threaded performance advantage is also a big help in gaming.

"After the launch of the Ryzen 3000 series, I don't think there's any reason for people to buy Intel processors anymore," said Travis Kirsch, director of client product management at AMD.

There's even better news for those who are already AMD fans: the Ryzen 3000 series still uses the AM4 socket, and AMD also said that the Ryzen 3000 CPUs are direct replacements for existing Ryzen 2000 CPUs, without the need to change the motherboard.
