According to Reuters on June 14, Huawei will delay the release of its foldable 5G phone Mate X by three months.
Vincent Pang, Huawei's senior vice president and head of corporate communications, told The Wall Street Journal that the Mate X is expected to be launched globally in September. Huawei originally planned to release the phone in June.
Huawei faces being cut off from getting updates to Google's Android operating system for its phones due to a US blacklist that prohibits US companies from doing business with Huawei. However, Vincent Pang denied the delay was due to the ban, saying Huawei is undergoing certification tests with multiple operators and the tests are expected to be completed in August.
He also told Reuters that Huawei could launch its Hongmeng operating system, which is currently being tested, within nine months.
"Our first choice is of course Google's Android because we have been a partner for many years. But if circumstances force us to do so, we can launch Hongmeng within six to nine months," said Vincent Pang.
Vincent Pang said Hongmeng is based on a version of Android that is made public through an open source license and is mainly used for mobile phones. Hongmeng will support other devices later.
Google has said it will no longer provide Android software for Huawei phones after a 90-day grace period granted by the U.S. government expires in August. Reuters reported on Thursday that Huawei has applied to trademark its Hongmeng operating system in several countries, a sign that the company may be deploying a backup plan in key markets.
Huawei applied for the Hongmeng trademark in China in August last year and was approved last month, according to a document on the website of China's Intellectual Property Office.
Vincent Pang denied recent media reports that Huawei had canceled the launch of its next-generation laptops, saying they would still be launched at a later date.
