The latest research report from market research firm Counterpoint pointed out that the impact of the Huawei ban may affect the company's development in the foldable smartphone market. In addition, Samsung Electronics, a South Korean mobile phone giant that also released a foldable phone at the same time as Huawei at this year's Mobile World Congress (MWC), originally expected to release the Galaxy Fold, but the US media found screen defects and will postpone its launch. Compared with Apple's foldable iPhone, it started later, but after the foldable phone market has developed for a period of time, the price will drop again after the technology matures.
The report pointed out that Counterpoint originally expected that the shipment of foldable phones would reach 1.9 million in 2019. However, after the disaster of foldable phones of these major manufacturers, the agency revised down the shipment of 2019 to 1.8 million. After Samsung failed to grab the title of the world's first foldable phone in 2018, it focused on upgrading the specifications of the Galaxy Fold foldable phone. It was originally scheduled to be launched at the end of April 2019, but during the promotion process of the US media, screen defects were found, and the launch was postponed to May. However, people familiar with the matter revealed that in order to solve the problems of the foldable screen and hinge, Samsung may spend more time to repair them, and the chances of launching it in June are slim.
In addition, Huawei has been affected by the Sino-US trade war, and its supply chain and Google's Android services have been restricted. It may be even more difficult to ship the foldable Mate X in a short period of time.
According to South Korean media "THE DIGITALTIMES", consumers are currently paying close attention to the foldable phone market. According to a Counterpoint survey, 40% of respondents are willing to buy foldable phones, and 50% of them are willing to choose Samsung's foldable phones. Counterpoint said that foldable phones are expensive, so it is unlikely to be popularized quickly in the next two years. The situation will change after entering the mature stage, and the optimization of Samsung Galaxy Fold's specifications will also affect the initial performance of the foldable phone market.
In addition, Apple is also expected to launch a foldable phone in 2021. By then, the already active foldable phone market is expected to see a reduction in pricing. Once the relevant specifications and foldable phone content mature, shipments in 2023 will reach 45 million units.
