The latest research report "Tablet and Notebook PC Connectivity Forecast" released by Strategy Analytics points out that by 2023, 45 million PCs and tablets will be connected to 5G worldwide, and the prospects for 5G services will be strengthened. The report points out that the 5G era will provide mobile operators with a new opportunity to communicate with consumers about the advantages of high-speed cellular connections and new use cases. This is a very necessary dialogue to bring more devices to these more efficient networks and succeed in the large-scale investment in 5G. Mobile operators will also have the opportunity to re-evaluate their pricing and data traffic plans with consumers to provide better services for 5G services on multiple devices other than smartphones.

The report also predicts:

Most 5G computing devices will be tablets and detachable 2-in-1 computers

Asia Pacific will account for more than 40% of 5G devices in use, North America will account for 29%, and Western Europe will account for 21% (2023 forecast)

Global sales of 5G computing devices will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 216% between 2019 and 2023

Eric Smith, Director of the Connected Computing Devices service at Strategy Analytics, noted, “Intel, Qualcomm, Arm, Microsoft, and a handful of PC vendors are developing new designs to meet the needs of a younger generation that expects (and pays for) smartphone experiences on their laptops. This development will occur over the next decade in parallel with the realization of 5G, opening up new possibilities for vendors and operators.”

David Mercer, Principal Analyst and Vice President of the Digital Consumer Practice at Strategy Analytics, added: “At the same time, vendors, carriers and retailers must have a clear understanding of how consumers choose mobile data plans. It is difficult for consumers to understand why they should pay their carrier $10 per month just for cellular connectivity outside the home when they can get free, unsecured Wi-Fi networks in fixed locations. The shape that new pricing plans take in a 5G world must be informed by a holistic view of consumers – what devices they use and how they use them.”

The report also identifies key issues that PC vendors must address in order to maximize their 5G ROI:

  1. Are traditional PC vendors moving fast enough to counter the threat from mobile-first vendors?

  2. What are the behaviors of those users who are most likely to adopt connected laptops?

  3. How will foldable tablet product usage evolve over time? How can design be used for competitive advantage?
