Fingerprint recognition is one of the main highlights of Apple's iPhone 5S. As a rival, Samsung is not to be outdone. Patent data shows that Samsung is improving its eyeball rolling recognition technology to achieve user identity recognition function. This new technology may be applied to Samsung's next-generation flagship smartphone.

Samsung is currently busy promoting its Galaxy Gear smartwatch around the world. Many tech bloggers have begun predicting the hardware features of Samsung's next-generation S-series flagship smartphone, one of which is an "iris scanner."

This is not the first time Samsung has tested the connection between human eyes and smartphones. For example, the Samsung Galaxy 4S already has the function of adjusting screen brightness or automatically turning pages with the eyes.

Earlier this month, Samsung submitted a patent application to the U.S. Trademark and Patent Office, indicating that the company may be considering improving the technology to upgrade it to user identity recognition technology.

Although the patent document does not mention how this technology will be used, it does compare it to the fingerprint recognition technology in Apple's iPhone 5S.

The patent states: “Iris scanning can be considered a biometric identification technology that is more advanced than fingerprint recognition or retinal scanning technology.”

A Samsung spokesman declined to comment. However, Samsung's patent filings indicate that the technology could be applied to a number of different devices, including computers, tablets and mobile phones.

Regardless of its practicality, technology companies are currently competing to develop sensing technology. Last week, a Sony patent application document published by the US Patent Office showed that the company is planning to develop a wearable computing device equipped with sensors. In addition, Google also has a patent for an electronic tattoo that can be attached to a person's neck.
