Panasonic exhibited the Ultra Wide Angle Camera, a system that uses four high-definition cameras to shoot 160-degree panoramic images, at the 2013 NAB Show, a broadcast equipment exhibition that opened in Las Vegas, the United States, on April 6, 2013 (US time).
This is a system that can automatically control the cameras and easily shoot panoramic images. It is expected to be used in broadcasts of sports events and concerts. The price has not yet been determined, but preparations are being made to launch it in the fall of 2013.
The Ultra Wide Angle Camera uses software that controls the cameras to reduce the workload when shooting panoramic images. The system user first selects a camera as a reference camera, and then the control software uses image recognition technology to analyze the images obtained by each camera and adjust the direction and zoom of the remaining three cameras to form a seamless panoramic image. Finally, the four images (1280×720 pixels) captured in this way are combined to generate a panoramic image (4736×720 pixels).
It is reported that this system is also equipped with a tracking function that can identify and track the position and movement of people in the image, which can be used for sports event guidance and monitoring systems.
