Affected by the rebound of the COVID-19 epidemic, domestic economic development in the first half of 2022 was extremely unusual. Unexpected sudden factors brought severe shocks, especially the two-month lockdown in Shanghai, which directly affected the overall economic situation in the second quarter and led to a significant increase in downward pressure.

Affected by this, the sales volume of industrial robots in the domestic market also declined in the second quarter of 2022. According to data from Gaogong Robot Industry Research Institute (GGII), the sales volume of industrial robots in the domestic market in the second quarter of this year fell by 7.54% year-on-year, with a total shipment volume of 69,881 units. Among them, domestic brands accounted for 38.46%; foreign brands accounted for 61.54%.

According to GGII analysis, due to the impact of the Shanghai epidemic in the second quarter, the supply chain and logistics were put to a great test, and sales of most manufacturers showed a downward trend, especially for manufacturers with production centers and supply chain centers in the Shanghai area. They were basically shut down in April and May, and gradually resumed operations in June. The current core contradiction is still concentrated on the supply side.

3C electronics industry demand is sluggish SCARA fell 7.75% year-on-year

From the perspective of product classification, GGII data shows that in the second quarter of 2022, the SCARA robots and DELTA robots in the Chinese market fell by 7.75% and 9.81% year-on-year respectively. Among them, the total shipments of SCARA robots were 18,036 units, of which domestic products accounted for 43.20%; the total shipments of DELTA robots were 1,535 units, of which domestic products accounted for 59.20%.

The decline in SCARA robot shipments in Q2 is due to the obvious shrinkage of demand in the electronics industry, its main market. According to GGII data analysis, China's mobile phone production in the second quarter of 2022 declined significantly year-on-year, and was below the critical point, down 2.7% year-on-year. In terms of microcomputer production, the second quarter of 2022 decreased by 5.0% year-on-year. In terms of integrated circuits, the second quarter decreased by 10% year-on-year, and the decline further widened. The sluggish performance of the 3C electronics industry is mainly due to the transmission of sluggish consumer demand, and smartphone orders have been drastically reduced.

The global electronics industry as a whole has entered a downward cycle, and there has been a large differentiation in the industry's business climate. The demand for consumer terminals such as smartphones and laptops has been sluggish, affecting the demand for upstream memory chips, panels and other components, and in turn affecting the supply chain performance of related companies in the industrial chain.

The decline in DELTA Robot's Q2 shipments was also directly affected by the consumer end. Weak consumption led to limited demand in the main markets such as food and daily chemicals. At the same time, the epidemic also created great resistance to the supply chain and delivery.

Collaborative robots performed well in the first half of 2022, with an increase of 20.05%

Looking back at the data released by GGII in the first half of 2022, it can be found that although overall consumer demand is weak, the sales of industrial robots in the Chinese market still increased by 3.78% year-on-year, among which collaborative robots and medium and large load six-axis robots led the growth rate, at 20.05% and 15.11% respectively. Small six-axis robots declined by 6.27% year-on-year, SCARA robots increased by 3.45% year-on-year, and parallel robots declined by 5.53% year-on-year.

In recent years, the market share of domestic collaborative robot manufacturers has continued to expand in China. Taking the 2022Q2 data released by GGII as an example, the total shipment of collaborative robots in the Chinese market was 4,678 units, an increase of 8.77% year-on-year; 3,959 of them were domestically produced, accounting for 85.54%; and 669 were foreign-funded, accounting for 14.46%. The market share of JEKA and Aobo exceeded 40%, and the market share of Universal Robots further shrank. The second-tier companies are basically dominated by domestic manufacturers.

Collaborative robots not only lead the growth in sales, but also continue to be popular in financing. According to GGII data, in the first half of 2022, there were 41 financing events in the field of industrial robots in China, involving more than 6.6 billion yuan, of which the financing amount of collaborative robots accounted for 26.47%, only slightly lower than that of the machine vision field.

The domestic industrial robot market is expected to grow by more than 20% in the second half of the year

Entering the third quarter, the shortage of parts has gradually eased, especially chips, and China's industrial robot production has begun to increase slightly. In this regard, Lu Hanchen, director of Gaogong Robot Industry Research Institute, also said: "The second half of the year did not have the 'big money release' that everyone expected. The demand side is beginning to show signs of fatigue, and the pressure and challenges are still huge."

At the same time, GGII also predicted that the domestic industrial robot market will grow by more than 20% in the second half of the year, with annual sales expected to reach 303,000 units, a year-on-year increase of 15%-20%.

From the current perspective, the growth rate of new energy is still strong. Together with lithium batteries and photovoltaic batteries, they are one of the few sub-products with positive growth in the first half of the year. In addition, the biggest change comes from the automotive field. The transformation of automobile electrification has reached a critical node, and the certainty has been further consolidated. Investment in the automotive field has begun to usher in new growth, and it is expected that the demand for robots will continue to be released.
