Frequently asked questions
Can the 5V differential signal of 1217C be used as a normal DI/DO point?
Answer: No. For details, see the appendix of the S7-1200 System Manual.
Can the analog input channel of the S7-1200 CPU be connected to a 0-20mA current signal? How to connect it?
A: The analog input channel of S7-1200 supports 0-10 V voltage signal. If you need to connect 0-20mA current signal, you can connect a 500ohm resistor in parallel.
Note: When using a 500Ω resistor, be aware of the power consumption of this measurement method. Make sure that when a DC 24 V voltage is applied across the resistor, the power consumption of the resistor is at least 1.16 W. At the same time, the accuracy of this method cannot be guaranteed.
Take the S7-1200's built-in analog input channel connected to the commonly used two-wire sensor 4-20mA current signal as an example, as shown below:
02 Digital signal module input and output wiring diagram
SM 1221 Digital Inputs
For sink input, connect "-" to "M" (as shown); for source input, connect "+" to "M"
SM 1222 Digital Outputs
The SM1222 DQ 8 relay switching module controls two circuits using common terminals: one normally closed contact and one normally open contact.
For example, to output "0", when the output point is disconnected, the common terminal (0L) is connected to the normally closed contact (.0X) and disconnected from the normally open contact (.0). When the output point is connected, the common terminal (0L) is disconnected from the normally closed contact (.0X) and connected to the normally open contact (.0).
SM 1223 Digital Input/Output
For sink input, connect the load to the “-” terminal (as shown); for source input, connect the load to the “+” terminal.
SM 1223 also has modules with AC voltage input and relay output, as shown below:
SM 1223 DI 8 x 120/230 VAC, DQ 8 x Relay (6ES7 223-1QH32-0XB0)
Digital signal board
The signal board (SB) can be used to add I/O to the CPU. It provides a low-cost and effective expansion for all SIMATIC S7-1200 controllers while maintaining the original space. The SB is connected to the front end of the CPU.

Frequently asked questions
Why is SM1223 connected and the signal output channel indicator lighted, but there is no voltage output?
Answer: The power supply of the output channel indicator light of the S7-1200 expansion module is provided by the bus, but the signal output requires module power supply. The correct wiring method is shown in the figure below:
