Apple CEO Tim Cook on Wednesday took aim at European Union rules aimed at curbing the power of U.S. tech giants, saying they could pose security and privacy risks to the iPhone, according to reports.

Cook made his first public comments on the Digital Markets Act (DMA) proposed by EU antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager, saying some parts of the bill were good, but others were not. Cook said he was concerned that the proposed new rules would lead to more apps being installed without going through Apple's App Store, also known as "side-loading."

"To give you an example of something that I don't think is in the best interest (of users): the wording of the 'Digital Markets Act' currently under discussion would force sideloading on iPhones," he said, speaking remotely at VivaTech, France's largest tech conference.

"So that would be an extreme way to get an app onto the iPhone," Cook said, adding: "It would undermine the security of the iPhone and a lot of the privacy features or privacy-intrusive labels and transparency around app tracking that we've built into the App Store."

Earlier this month, Andreas Schwab, the EU lawmaker tasked with reviewing the proposed new rules, said he wanted to strengthen the legislation and narrow its scope to target only large companies such as Google, Amazon, Apple and Facebook.

Cook said Apple will engage in the debate and try to find a way forward.
