If there is any device that can replace smartphones in the future, the answer may be wearable devices.
Sources revealed that Facebook has cooperated with Italy's Luxottica, the world's largest sunglass company, to develop Ray-Ban smart glasses with augmented reality (AR) functions.
Sources said that Facebook has been developing AR smart glasses at its AR and VR research and development center Facebook Reality Labs in the past few years, but due to repeated setbacks in the development process, it turned to external help.
Facebook hopes to complete the research and development of the project through cooperation with Ray-Ban's parent company Rosautica Group and start selling the smart glasses in 2023, 2024 or 2025 at the latest. The internal code name of this Ray-Ban smart glasses is "Orion". Its goal is to replace smartphones, allowing users to answer calls, show messages to users on a small display, and live broadcast to social media friends and fans.
Earlier media reports said Facebook is developing an artificial intelligence (AI) voice assistant that can be used to interact and communicate with smart glasses. In addition, Facebook has also begun experimenting with a ring-shaped device codenamed Agios that allows users to input information through motion sensors.
